Flooring Calculator UK 2026: Free & Easy Cost Estimator

Use our flooring calculator to work out exactly how much flooring you actually need. Add every room or section (L-shaped alcoves included), pick your flooring type, and we’ll work out the area, how much to buy, how many packs, underlay cost if you want it, and roughly what the whole thing will set you back.

Add every room or section you’re flooring — including any L-shaped alcoves as their own box — pick your flooring type, and we’ll work out materials, waste, underlay and total cost in one go.

Choosing the Right Waste Allowance

Nobody tells you this bit: you’re never going to use 100% of the flooring you buy. Cuts go wrong, corners eat more than you think, and you’ll want a spare plank for the day future-you scuffs one.

That’s why the flooring calculator above picks a sensible default waste % the moment you choose your flooring type — but you can always override it if your room’s trickier than average:

  • 5% – Nice square room, no surprises
  • 10% – The safe bet for laminate, LVT, engineered wood, carpet and tiles in most rooms
  • 15% – Worth bumping up to manually if you’ve got lots of corners, alcoves, or an awkward layout
  • 20% – Auto-applied for herringbone or chevron patterns — that layout eats far more material than a standard lay

Got an L-shaped room or more than one space to floor? Add each rectangular section separately in the calculator and it’ll total everything up for you — no need to do the maths by hand.

One more thing worth knowing: buy it all at once if you can. Flooring comes in production batches, and if you run out halfway through and order more later, there’s a real chance the new stuff won’t quite match. Order enough the first time and save yourself that headache.

Not sure which flooring to choose?

flooring calculator laminate flooring

Laminate Flooring

Budget-friendly, tough, and genuinely easy to install — a solid first-timer choice for living rooms, bedrooms and hallways.

Luxury Vinyl (LVT/LVP)

Waterproof, hard-wearing, and looks far more expensive than it is. Great for kitchens, bathrooms, and anywhere small feet or paws are involved.

Engineered wood flooring in lounge

Engineered Wood

Real wood on top, smarter construction underneath — more stable than solid hardwood without giving up the look. A step up if the budget allows it.

Solid hardwood flooring

Solid Hardwood

The proper, timeless option. Costs more upfront, but you can sand and refinish it for decades — this is the “buy once” flooring choice.

carpet flooring
Carpet flooring in bedroom

Carpet Flooring

Soft, warm, and the obvious pick for bedrooms and cosy living spaces. Comes in more colours and textures than you’ll have patience to scroll through.

Large porcelain floor tiles

Floor Tiles

Waterproof and nearly indestructible — the sensible choice for kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and anywhere that sees a lot of mess.

🛒 What else will you need?

Flooring is never a one-purchase job. Here’s what tends to be missing from people’s shopping lists (ask us how we know).

Flooring underlay roll

1. Underlay

Quietens things down, smooths out a slightly uneven subfloor, and makes the finished floor feel nicer underfoot. Don’t skip it.

Flooring installation kit

2. Flooring Installation Kit (the one you actually need)

Tapping block, pull bar, mallet, spacers — this one kit covers 90% of what you’ll reach for during the install. Just get it.

Tape measure

3. Tape measure

Measure twice, order once. This is the tool that saves you from the “why is my floor 30cm short” conversation with yourself.

Knee pads

4. Knee Pads

You will be on your knees for longer than you think. Future you will send thanks.

Flooring Underlay Tape

9. Flooring Underlay Tape

Seals the underlay joins so everything sits neat and, depending on the underlay, adds a bit of extra moisture protection.

Before You Start

The short checklist that saves the most regret:

  • Measure every room twice — yes, even if you’re confident
  • Check your subfloor is actually level, not “probably fine”
  • Let your flooring acclimatise to the room before installing
  • Order 5–10% extra (see above — trust the maths, not your optimism)
  • Buy every pack from the same batch if you can

Frequently Asked Questions

How much extra flooring should I buy?
It depends on your flooring type — the calculator sets this automatically the moment you pick one (5% for solid hardwood, 10% for most other types, 20% for herringbone or chevron), but you can always adjust it manually if your room’s more complicated than average.

Can I use this calculator for laminate flooring?
Yep — this flooring calculator works for laminate, LVT, engineered wood, solid hardwood, carpet, floor tiles, and anything else sold by the square metre. Just double check the pack coverage on the box before you buy.

Can I calculate multiple rooms?
Yes — click “Add another room or section” to add as many rectangular sections as you need. For an L-shaped room, split it into two rectangles and add each one separately; the calculator totals everything up for you.

How do I calculate flooring packs?
Enter the pack coverage printed on the flooring packaging, and the calculator works out how many packs you’ll need based on your total room area and waste allowance.

Does this calculator include waste?
Yes — pick 5%, 10%, 15% or 20% depending on how complicated your layout is.

Does this calculator include underlay?
It can — tick “Include underlay in this estimate” and add your underlay’s price per m² and waste %, and it’ll fold that cost into your total alongside the flooring.

Disclaimer

This calculator gives you an estimate based on what you enter — actual flooring needs can shift depending on room shape, layout pattern, and what the manufacturer recommends. Always check the product specs before you buy.
